Kaimuki, Jonesey, virani, Bullet, BenZ, Jen - thanks! Bullet, too true - it is too hard to do simple versions of these guys. I just can't cut corners no matter how hard I try. The quikis might have started and finished with #1!

Well, I had a great night out with Tama at his opening. I didn't end up taking my camera because I was on foot, but he may have some pics to share when he gets back. We went on to visit another carver/friend/inspiration of ours who specialises in jade, and saw some jaw-dropping pieces in progress when we stopped by. Lots of ogling of stone, discussions about art and carving, and low-level substance abuse. Good times!

Meanwhile, here's the completed skulleater. I've had a lot of interest in this guy so maybe there will be a MK III or even IV not far away!

The precision on this piece is So Obvious it's unbelievable. Do you guys know how difficult it is to get those Perfectly machined looking lines? In STONE? This SMALL? The precise detail is just breathtaking Paipo. The inlay fit is just as perfect and beautiful too. Iyyyiiiiiyyiii!
The Only PROVLEM is there is Only ONE Picture??? Paipo, We NEED MORE Pictures, c'mon now..

Yes indeedy! Precision is an understatement - however it is what we have come to expect from our friend Paipo. This piece is exceptionally tight Paipo. You never cease to impress. Where is this beach where you plan to "release" some of your rejects? When I get to NZ (one day) I will plan my entire stay around beachcoming there....

Cheers to all once again! I had little idea where this piece was going during most of the carving process and it really didn't work itself out til right near the finish. One of the problems that comes from doing virtually no drawing I guess. Anyway, I've always had a thing for skulls and bones, well before I was into carving and tiki, and I envisage more darker themed pieces coming soon. I know there are a lot of other tiki people that are also into horror and monsters in a big way.
Tool/technique wise - just the diamond burrs again on this piece, with a whisper of sandblasting to smooth out a few scratches. I used to go over a lot of my pieces with the fine burrs but don't bother these days as most of the shapes I use don't come in that grit. It's a matter of reducing the revs and pressure to minimise the toolmarks. The right stone will actually start to shine if you go over it enough times - the Hua Moa almost looked polished when I finished. Patience and obsession help too!
For the "machined" lines...a fresh burr, lots of revs and water, cut hard and steady, and don't stop til you get to the end of the line...

What about that submersible-thingy you get to play with from time to time? Would the batteries/fueltank make it to NZ..? You could claim it was a business trip..

I've looked at this guy about a dozen times and haven't been able to come up with the right words. Droool

Thanks JP, Craig and GROG (took me a minute to work out what was going on in that pic!)
Back in the shed finally...lots of different pieces on the go, but only one worth posting at present. I didn't get time to get early pics of this one in progress, but it didn't look very good in the roughout phase anyway. I tend to just hack away fairly crudely at various spots until it gets down to where it needs to be!

Cool. I Love how the lines just Flow in this guy. Amazing how you could get those large features on that small face. Sweet!

too cool, Paipo! those pieces are awesome.

the new guy looks awesome paipo. i'm wondering what you'll do with his eyes. i think it would look cool if you could make some eyes with the same agate you used for wheku's tongue.

Cheers Robin, Jen, kiwishaman, G, Moondance, Ben, Pat and Bullet. The big nose (and the big lips) are for reasons which will become apparent in the next lot of pics. G is on to it... Hoping to have this guy in the bag today!
It was a heap of extra work geting the features so deep Ben, but they have to accomodate certain "extras" so I had no choice. Defnitely a little more naturalistic this time. Bullet - no inlaid eyes for this guy...in fact I'm still undecided as to how I'll do them. I have room, but the high spots around them make it hard to get in using my usual techniques. I'm sure I'll figure something out!

Another 2 stone pendent, eachone more unique then the last. I love this one!

I think you're getting Tahiti confused with Haiti..?? Thats some seriously freeky Voodoo-Tiki you've got there. (Sewn lips?)

-Sometimes you scare me dude.

There is always a kind of "suspense" around each new piece you're carving and it is always a great surprise to discover what comes next time after time, great job.

P.S: Did you purchase a "Carving Jack" ?

Benjamin.

Great carving! With you next post could we see a profile view of this carving? Thanks.

Sure!

I'm having real trouble getting a decent pic as always - I'll be doing a full jungle backdrop photoshoot when it's complete. The cord work is taking a lot longer than I expected...
No carving jack yet - I wish I had time to carve wood! It is going to happen one day!
cheers again all!
:tiki:

Paipo strikes again!
Shrunken Head!?!?
