For years you have been seeking your Holy Grail of Exotica ~ 1957s "The Lost Continent" Original Soundtrack directed by none other that Francesco Lavagnino.

You've set auto alerts on eBay, scoured flea markets, swap meets, and thrift stores to no avail. You know they have sold for as much as $500 so you have liquidated assets so that you are ready to strike when the iron is hot. Then you find it! $5 on Craigslist, free shipping. "Slightly warped but otherwise good condition" but it has no picture. The idiots obviously don't know what they have. So you quickly fire off a check and wait...

Someone has made it into a candy dish!

I don't thinks anyone said it had to be inspired by the album cover, how about inspired by the LP? I like to make a couple of "throw-away" pieces to help get the creative juices frowing.

MadDogdMike not only were you inspired so am I. I'm going to use your album cover to make a mug of the girl and skull etc. Thank you for he help. Your record bowl is going to be super cool, Wendy

T

Sneaky, Mike. Very sneaky.... Sneaky Tiki....

Dig the LP bowl, good thinking. :)

I found the album on Amazon.com for $65. Dan will have to be content with his Denny and Lyman albums.

I started working on a mug based on your album MadDogMike. It's all carving and no added clay. Photos soon. Cheers, Wendy

Mike- sweet

Hunting today
Found these 4
10.00

Wendy- I'm sure Dan-0 has 3 of each, but all new to me
:)

Look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with

Jon

He only has the first one. Good hunting Jon, Wendy

Jon -

I think you over paid! Album number four should have only been $1.27.

Please post more albums you collectors. I need inspiration!

Lori

Unfortunately in 1967 I was unable to crawl to the store
to get the original release :)

Pg 2 of this post

Damned young whippersnapper! In 1967 I was practically old enough to DRIVE to the store. (Yes, I was only 9 but we started driving early on the farm :) )

Zero- off to a fast start, lookin good
Mike- u KraZy

Zero, I got so excited at the prospect of making a smart-ass remark to Jon that I forgot to comment about your painting - love it!

Ok, it took a while to decide on the album inspiration.
I was able to narrow it down to 3 records.
Here is the winner (for now)! :)

Note: I reserve the right to change my mind if I don't like where it's going

T

Zero, looking great....

Jon, like where this is going....

Now I have to decide.... bowl... mug.... hanging wall tile art thing..... hmmmm.......

oh, and which record, too (narrowed down to a few classics....)

started mine today at least laid one color :)
more to come zero thats looking sweet.

Off to a great start Anthony!

I think I will go with a new exotica album for my inspiration instead of an older classic; "Waitiki 7s New Sounds of Exotica"

I want to see if I can make a mug based on Sam Gambino's very stylized Moai

Ano- can't wait to see what ya do
Anthony- one color in and I can't wait to see more
Mad Man- love that album, mug it bruddah

:)

Ok, here we go

Got a little more done today but its slow going

hang10 that looks great cant wait to see this progress

G

That is great! That gives me termites in my woody just looking at it. I do believe I will be participating in this one, provided my idea pans out. The artists here set the bar pretty high.

Jon & Anthony, you are kickin' butts and takin' names!

Got my "Priceless Exotica Album Metamorphosized to Ashtray" fired and glazed

If I can remember where I put my fire-on decals I'll be done with this "warm-up" project :D

Mike that looks like it would do a number on a needle
Thank you mike for running the swap again feel like we cant say that enough
I absolutely love the challenge it always pushes me to do just a bit more.
Mahalo MaddogMike

well a little more but this will be it for the weekend

i am really having fun with this one.

Z

Beautiful stuff!

Anthony- coming along good bruddah...
Mad dog- wow, that looks cool...

Fun part started

Terrific work men. I'll be posting when we are home. It's a storm all the way to our city. 6 hours in the rain with the wipers swishing. Gotta do it the clay is waiting. Wendy

The fired on decals allow for tiny lettering, that is a pt 8 font, no way I could do that with a brush.
OK that was fun, now on to a real Exotica project

Hey Mikey, I like it...

That looks so real MadDogMike. The record belongs in my album cover. Thank you for the use of your album. Maybe more artists will use it too. Here's what I've done
for the MadDogMike Christmas Album inspired Swap art.

A while back I had poured a big mug and then never got back to make it into something. Now MadDogMike posts this album cover and I knew that the mug shape was perfect for this project.

This is the album.

This is the completely dried out mug.

To make it easier to carve and to prevent a lot of dust I stuck it in a bucket of water.

I carved the information on the bottom and then cut out the woman from a printed photo of the cover.

I held her in place while I used a wooden pick to carve the outline.

Even a tiny point can remove a good amount of clay.

Now I used a razor blade to cut out the paper on the inside of the arms.

I didn't do a great job because one bracelet was so white and that part got cut out too.

I was careful and drew the correct outline while holding the photo in place again. So now I have the outline for the first part done.

Cheers, Wendy

Wendy- awesome as usual, love the Cevola step by steps...

Lil more

hang10tiki we could use one of those. I love your step by steps. Wendy

:)

Wendy, looks good. So you're going to carve it all from mostly dried clay without adding any clay to it? Hmmm, this is going to be interesting.

Jon, very cool. Getting close to done?

I missed a lot of great looking work going on here, I best pick out an album and get movin'. Anthonymaye are you printing that or painting?

Some awesome things happening here
wendy i cant wait to see that mug blossom.
Hang10 that looks damn cool
Maddogmike the print sets that thing off

Cy im painting it... one shot on a primed board
not really stepping out of my comfort zone on this one :)

Thanks guys, yes it will all be carved with no additional clay added. Wendy

Thanks guys

Update

Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!

Anthony, dig it.

Hang10, looking sweeeeet. Looks like a (wooden) carbon copy of the album- impressive!

Wendy, look forward to seeing yours progress- like Mike, I'm curious to see what happens. How dry is the clay?

While I've been trying to figure out how to work some art w/ this album (though I've never heard it, have to find it ASAP):

II'm going to try to work on a method to use for this classic cover (which no one has jumped on as of yet????):

Note: this may change....

made a little more progress hope to have the main work
done this weekend then its just lettering and framing it.

anthonymaye love those wild and crazy colors.

hang10tiki that is a perfect copy, how did you get it from the album onto wood?

Here's the next step on mine. I used a wooden stick with a point and pressed hard enough on the photo to make the picture show up on the clay. You can also see where I've started carving the rest of the body.

Have a great weekend, Wendy

Anthony, Hang10, killer jobs.

Wendy, holy clay carbon copy! Thanks for the step by steps. Look forward to seeing more!

Okay, Hang10, you get a holy wood carbon copy! (too).

Tripe posts! Tiki Ano you caught GROG's ailment and its worse.

I was asked how dry this mug is and the answer is completely dry. I can wet the surface to carve or not. I did to begin with but I did not with these steps because I'd lose the outline that I'd pressed into the clay.

I finished the outline by making the cuts deeper.

Next I just continued to carve to make the girl and skull more 3D.

Step by step. Wendy

WOW Wendy thats beautiful!

BT

ummmm... uuhhh...holy COW! Don't know what to say, that is fantastic Wendy!

Anthony- looking good bruddah, reminds me of a picture I had as a kid,
I just can't remember what. Like a trading card or something.... Kool

Wendy- thanks. First draw it on then I heat up the wood burner...
The only bummer is the smoke in the eyes :(
Yours is looking good...
