I don't see that Baby Doe or Otto or anyone else has posted about this year's Tiki Oasis here yet. It's scheduled for August 2-6 at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego.

https://www.tikioasis.com

Let's use this space for planning beforehand and posting recaps afterwards.

Thank you, I was waiting for someone to post. It will be the first TO for my wife and me.

Yes, thank you for posting. The 2023 TO tickets have been on sale - but does anyone know if seminar/symposium tickets are on sale yet? Or when they will be? (Nothing on their facebook page....)

Ooops! Sorry - I've just been informed that though seminar tickets are not yet available, they are working on that and may be available next week. Yay!

Informed where? I haven't seen updates anywhere.

Last year was my first time in attendance, and it was great, which is why I'll be back again.

Watch this space (probably) for an "official" TC meet up announcement. I will look forward to meeting you and the missus there....

Looking forward to getting together again in 2023. Would love for you to shake another amazing cocktail for Pineapple Whip & I.

I second that Mele Ipo !!! Hamo shakes up some amazing cocktails !! Can't wait to meet up with everyone at Tiki Oasis. :)

I wasn't exactly sure if to post here or create a new thread so it had more visibility.....so, I created a new thread with the topic of a TC gathering at Oasis TC gathering at Tiki Oasis SD 2023

We are lucky enough to have a room in the Palm Tower, so, we have offered our room as a meeting place, if desired. Check out the Topic linked above, and see if there's interest enough to start organizing it :)

Cheers !!

Moai Matt Aloha !!! News Flash !! Just in...I saw that seminars are listed on eventbrite. You can search under the title "Tiki Oasis 2023 Seminars"

Tickets go on sale this Saturday !! 06-17-23 not sure what time though

Thanks for posting about this. I never got any email and don't see anything on the TO website about more specific seminar descriptions. But I will definitely be watching eventbrite on the 17th.

Hamo No worries…I hope that they will post about what time the go on sale…some of them like the beachbum classes sell out SUPER fast.

Just heard from Honu Ho'Aloha and Kai Dawg that the seminars, pool cabanas, pin-up photo shoots, Arlo reservations will all be available to purchase and reserve starting this Saturday at 10am. This info was from facebook... posting it here for those without facebook.

I assume the seminars are just available to people who have paid to attend the event? I'll be coming in on Saturday for the free marketplace.

No, no, Mike--anyone can get into the seminars, regardless if you have tickets for evenings at the resort after 4PM. So take a look at what's offered Saturday and see if something tickles your fancy (as long as it doesn't conflict with the TC meetup....🤣)

Looks like the TO website has been updated with info on a few things. Pinup photo shoots appear to be available now, pool cabanas at 9AM PST 6/17, and the Arlo at 7PM PST 6/19. Still no more specific descriptions on seminars, though.

Good to know, thanks Hamo

Does anyone have a link to seminar descriptions? I see the list on Eventbrite and TO website but no descriptions. I assume the Beachbum Berry one includes a few tasters if I can get tickets? Any other suggestions?

[edit:] signed up for 5 of them, mostly the ones with booze + Mai Kai restoration 🍹

[ Edited by BlackWater on 2023-06-17 10:15:54 ]

Jump on Beachbum Berry if you can - I just checked (10:08) and it doesn't show as sold out yet. There are 3 small cocktails with that one.

They've been really bad about posting descriptions in a timely manner this year. I'll try to copy and paste in a few minutes.

Copied from the Oasis Facebook page. Apologies for any bad fomatating, tried to add spaces between each one, but may have missed some.

Looks like the web designer is still putting the finishing touches on the description pages - crossing my fingers and toes (and eyes) all up tomorrow. Meanwhile below is a mega overview!

Thanks, Bama, I hadn't seen any descriptions anywhere than the scant details on Eventbrite. Interestedly, I see that the Thursday Fassionola seminar didn't go on sale with the others.

The Bum appears to still available as I post, but the Vincent Price one is sold out. I'll see you at that one and the Bum's on Saturday, and Don the Beachcomber on Friday.

Hah, descriptions just in time. We signed up for Fri: Beachcomber, CA Forgotten Bars, Hawaiian Rum; Sat Mai Kai, Beachbum Berry, (+ TC meetup)

“Forgotten Bars” is not what I expected (cocktail napkins of California) but the rest looks great. And maybe there will be exciting napkins. Glad Typhoon Tommy will be at the Mai Kai one, I’ve been following him in Instagram.

I am really surprised that Beachbum Berry isn't sold out yet. it usually sells out instantly - had it in the cart last year but it disappeared before we could finish checking out. This time it looks like we're gonna have an extra pair to try to sell (two of us tried, site was slow, then both went through at the same time.)

It looks like the Vincent Price one is open again - I don't see anything showing as Unavailable at this point. I figured the Bum & Don the Beachcomber ones would sell out right away.

Weird.

WOW!! bama....that was awesome !! Thanks bamalamalu for putting all the seminar info up. We were able to get History of Rum (Ian Burrell is super funny, fun, and also has great info smashed in there), Mai-Kai, Vincent Price, tropical tasting # 2, not sure about bum....Mele and I tried to divide and conquer :)

Can't wait to see/meet everyone !!

Glad the seminar info helped people!

Will likely pick up a one or two others, but for now just got the Don the Beachcomber one and two sets for the Beachbum. Requested a refund for the duplicate and contacted them, but no response yet. I'm astounded that it isn't sold out yet; maybe they're holding it down the road in the football stadium this year?

I'm surprised that most every seminar is still available. But we know that GROG and Wendy and Dan won't be there, so maybe there are a lot of people who aren't coming this year?

Hamo, did you get all the seminars you wanted? How about everyone else? Did everyone get signed up for the seminars they were interested in?

H
Hamo posted on Thu, Jun 29, 2023 11:21 PM

I did (although I'm a little torn about skipping the Mai-Kai one in order to make it to the Bum's). Looks like we'll be together for the Vincent Price seminar.

I signed up for both? Mai Kai is 2:30 and Bum is 3:30. Is that too tight to make the second one?

FYI, the seminar descriptions are available if you click on each separate daily page ... https://www.tikioasis.com/seminars/thursday/

https://www.tikioasis.com/seminars/friday/

https://www.tikioasis.com/seminars/saturday/

https://www.tikioasis.com/seminars/sunday/

I would check those pages for updates. The Mai-Kai seminar on Saturday now includes manager Kern Mattei! Mai-Kai-team_999

The Mai-Kai is a miraculous survivor. The South Florida historic landmark endured a near-catastrophic roof collapse in late 2020 but found new owners with deep pockets and an ambitious vision to preserve it for generations to come. When the restoration of the 66-year-old Polynesian palace is complete, it will be meticulously returned to its former glory and also include millions of dollars in enhancements that respect the past and charge boldly into the future. In this multimedia presentation, embedded journalist Jim “Hurricane” Hayward of The Atomic Grog blog will take you behind the scenes at The Mai-Kai. He’ll be joined by two key members of The Mai-Kai team: Creative director “Typhoon Tommy” Allsmiller will offer unique insights into the painstaking restoration efforts, while longtime manager Kern Mattei will provide up-to-the-minute news on the renovation project, along with his unique perspective on Mai-Kai history.

Just announced: Kern and I are also doing a special cocktail class on Friday!

The Derby Daiquiri and Beyond: How to Create Your Own Classic

The Mai-Kai's Derby Daiquiri was one of the most celebrated cocktails of the mid-century, a simple riff on the Cuban classic by master mixologist Mariano Licudine. Six decades later, it remains one of the most popular drinks on the historic restaurant's menu. It also provides a case study on how a vintage recipe can be enhanced by just a few simple tweaks, creating something new and exciting. Join The Mai-Kai's longtime manager, Kern Mattei, and cocktail blogger Jim "Hurricane" Hayward for an examination of Licudine's genius as they guide you toward creating your own signature classic.

Okole maluna!

Depends on what you decide to do. I'd expect the Mai Kai presentation to go the whole hour, and it looks like it's at the other end of the convention center from the Bum, which will take a few minutes (possibly up to five, if there are a ton of people in the halls and how fast/slow you move) to get from place to place.

Based on my experience volunteering at a rum tasting last year, people will probably line up 10-15 minutes beforehand to try to get good seats when the doors open. Then the doors will close when it starts, but you can still get in. If you think sitting up front is important, you might decide to leave the first presentation a little early.

Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I should get a ticket for the Mai Kai....

We're getting closer--I fly into SD three weeks from tonight!

I see that the website seems to be updated with the complete schedule, including musical acts. The New Les Baxter Orchestra on Thursday is interesting, and I'm looking forward to hear Tikiyaki on Friday.

Hamo We are excited about the Mai Kai seminar. Hopefully/Maybe we will see you at that one?

BlackWater We are in the Ian Burrell seminar which ends at 2:30pm...and the Mai Kai seminar which starts at 2:30pm. I think we are just going to wing it, and see how it goes, if we leave early from the first, or, come in a bit late from to the 2nd. Luckily all the seminars are toooo far away from each other.

How do room parties work? Are they free, friends only, cover charge? I see that some have corporate sponsorship and some don't. Do I need to bring cash, rum, ?

BlackWater There is a great (bit long) read from its origins !! ...I hope the link below works...

https://tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic_id=14339&start=0

...basically all the room and suite parties strated as TC meetups...then bars became involved, and sponsors, and then now "Suite Soirees" are official parties with corporate sponsorship.

ALL the parties are free !! They cannot charge, but, there is a difference between the Suite Soirees and Room Craw parties

Suite Soirees are "official" and are sponsors. The bartenders appreciate tips. These are paid suites by spirit / beer manufacturers....and I believe part of their job. The parties are big, lots of music, and lots of fun !!

Room Crawl Parties are individuals that want to throw a fun party. Our Party "Mayhem Under The Sea" (our flyer is posted on this thread) ...we pay for everything out of our own pocket. We have been very lucky to have sponsors pay for some of the alcohol, but, it is us, being creative, and wanting to celebrate and have fun. We also appreciate tips ;)

Our party is Fri 2-4pm...if you are able to make it...come and say hello to me...we are old school, and have HOST Badges, with our names :)

Hope to see you there...we have some good drinks !!

Great info, thanks. Be sure to update with your room # when you have it.

GROG might come down Saturday during vending, but not staying past 4PM for entertainment and room parties.

GROG!!! If you are there by 11:30 AM you MUST come to the TC meetup!

Is there a room number? I couldn't find a location.

Patience—in time, all shall be revealed….

The room looks awesome! (Royal Palm 1616) It was too busy but I’m looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow.
