You are bustin' it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really appreciate the obsessive quality of your work. It comes off as work the artist HAD to get out of his system.

I also like that you experiment, rather than getting in a rut.

Even the air is salty in there!
Well, did some painting on the 2nd journey and the "slow one"
(Mandala piece I've been working on since March-April)
and will post those when i get some pix!
In the meantime i have some ink drawings on Arches Watercolor paper for you!
but first...
raves-How's your new home? Did the move go okees?
What's up with the Crack Clown? hmmmmmmmmm....

Ben-try to write everything in one post...it's the law!
You Sir, are the one who ROCKS!
and RAPS!

greentikipat-It's gonna be a blast at the Hukilau!
Hope to be able to get some facetime with all you EastCoaster Artists!
Mutual inspiration Pact in FULL EFFECT!

Mooney!
Mahalos man!
Keep up the sweet azz work on your end too!

Clarita!-:) If you ever visit California,we will have a HUGE PARTY for you! :)

Sneaks! Thanks bro! It would be fun to do some more Hawaiian/Tiki/Tropical prints for shirts...
but after doing them from concept to completion, it's a pain in the butt after the art is done....
If someone would do all the stupid production stuff, i would gladly get some prints going!
Peace! Out!

Benz!
Thanks for popping in! Always honored when you visit us Other Crafts guys!
Only a few more weeks and i can shake your hand in person......
the same hands that have carved all those Fantastic Tikis!
HAPPY! :)
Glad i could provide a Rush for you Sir!!!!
i may be bringing some loose drawings to trade with my artist friends
so I'll bring the Maori guy along and we'll see what happens!
(he does keep asking about you....)
HAPPYHAPPY that you're HAPPY!

Well...painting progress posted later!
For now......
some Drawins!

"the Voyage"
ink, bleachpen and sharpie on watercolor paper

"Guardians of the Sun"
ink, bleachpen and sharpie on watercolor paper

"Nocturne"
ink, bleachpen and sharpie on watercolor paper

"Little Warrior"
ink on watercolor paper

and my favorite of the batch.....
"Happy Hut in a Sun Shower"

that's it for now!
Talk atcha later!

Oooooooh...the hut is wunduuuuurfull!!! :)

Thank you VampiressRN!
i like that piece a lot too....
The background gave me the feel of a sun shower
well, a Midwestern sun shower as I've never been to the Islands....
But bigToe wrote and said that's exactly how one feels on the Islands...
YAY!
Well, besides the previous drawings, i got to work on the Journey-2nd canvas
this week....
Here's what i got so far....

just a few changes from the big ink study...
had to adapt it to the square format.....
changed his helmet and the sun face

and gave him some hair and feathers....

i like how it's Polynesian, but also alludes to the classical roman archetype of a warrior
how it kind of crosses cultures to reach an essence...
here's a close-up of his face....

I'm doing this canvas in acrylic and MAY or MAY NOT use paintpen with it....
Here's the prow so far...layering and layering colors
and i have to be careful i don't cover up the boatsman in the background too much!

here's the paddle attached to the boat...just started on this area
so you can get a feel of the beginning layers.... and the transparency...

Humorous intermission....
Whilst watching Bamboo Ben's shop this weekend
i was honored by many esteemed visitors....
two of them....not so esteemed...but they brought gifts!
GROG brought a Pixie stick
Squid brought a TWIX bar (with JAVA!)
and this beautiful piece...
LOVE!

At first i thought that this would lead to an uncomfortable situation
until Dave smiled and turned the object and revealed.....

a Hawaiian Warrior!
Ready to be painted up and brought to life!
Genius! That Boy has an EYE for this stuff!
i loves my Squid!
Ernie too! i guess(that pixie Stick amped me out!)

end of Humorous intermission....

Back in march i started this porthole piece
worked a little bit on it in March...
at the Chop....
then dropped it for awhile...
when the mModern came up
i didn't like the porthole piece
so i did those 3 from scratch
and the porthole piece
sat lonely in the studio/garage
becoming a home for black widows....
Until this weekend!
YAY!
Decided to revive this guy
and work on him while minding Ben's store.....
and now i like it again!
not sure if I'm gonna hang it square
or as a diamond....

Here's some details of the figures so far...
I'm thinking the name will be like "mandala of the plumeria"
or "Guardians of the Plumeria" or sumptin like thet!

Corner guy!

Center guy!
He looks good right side up and upside down!

and the middle part I've just started...
was gonna put a landscape in there
but decided to go hippy-trippy on it!
Plus ,that ways you can hang it a number of ways!
YAY!

Well, that's all i got......except the yawns..got lots of those!
G'night dear family!

TD

Your stuff is just Incredible

R

:D Two posts in one night!
I like how the watercolor paper ones turned out, especially the happy hut and the nocturne; the colors are gorgeous.

And the move went over well, just organizing the place now.
And the crack clown is from METALOCALYPSE a ridiculous metal show...he's redonkulous.

ANYWAY...

I love the Journey piece so far!
I like that you opt to give him flowing locks
The changes you did for the sun are a lot better! :)

And yaaay the Mandala is gettin done! I always wondered what happened to that piece

Rawk on Kin!
Glad to see ya gettin back into the swing of things :D

EDIT: Oh yeah! Rad find that Dave made! That's gonna look coolies when ya get to it!

The Guardians of the Plumeria porthole piece has a very Disney feel to me. Like it should be painted on the ceiling of the Enchanted Tiki Room. And I mean that in a good way - Disney is often my high water mark for craftsman ship when it comes to art.

Hey Ken- That piece is looking incredible... How you come up with so many beautiful objects and shapes to fill up the spaces is beyond me! It reminds me of looking at the ceiling of a cathedral.

RH

I would have guessed, based on your art, that you are very young, but you've made it clear that you know who the really cool older artists are (Roger Dean, Rodney Matthews, and, I think, Alfonse Mucha).

Do you know Ron Cobb, Syd Mead, or Chris Foss?

J

and do you know Jerry Lewis?

Lookin great LLT!!!!! LOVE the corner guy! - How bout a Tiki pendant of him???

H

SOOOO much to look at--so little time! I have to check back every few days just to finish looking at one piece--my eyeballs are full! (Full of goodness, though)

Aloha Kidz!
A lot of ground covered this week
so i must be brief....
GROG-thanks for the java Twix and flip-off! twice!
Sophista-tiki-Thankies Mc Gracias tiki Soul Sistah!
Bowana-about time it got re-started...Didn't like it at the time of the mModern, but now it's sticking!
i may bring it to the Chop in a few weeks and finish the dern thing!
Good Times!
Duddy-Thanks! Now get back to crackin those books!
raves-Yup! back in the swing FULL FORCE! Thanks for the STOKE!
TikiShark-Thank you soooo much! i wanted to get that happyhappy feeling for this one !
Can i fly down and paint it on your ceiling? Pleeeez!?
Sam Gam-my hero! Glad you like the mandala..mahalos!
How do i come up with the shapes to fill the spaces....
One word....
Tetris!
Robb-Thanks for the compliment, but i only LOOK and ACT young!
I'm almost 44! I'm familiar with Foss and mead, but not Cobb-I'll have to look him up!
i switch around from the cool EVEN OLDER than Dean,Matthews, and even Mucha sometimes
I like to read and study a lotta stuff
As for art-it's never-ending.....
Flemish masters to Surrealism to the Symbolists to Children's Storybooks to comics to......
you get the picture! So many Masters to learn from! in History and here on TC!
jpmartdog-no,i don't know jerry lewis.......does he paint too?
Many mysterious projects and collaborations over the horizon....
you'll just have to wait..Thanks for the enthusiasm-it's contagious!
Howland! Get back to work on that junglaroo room! Check back here every six months....
That way you can get that master project finished so i can come visit!
See you in a couple of days!
Well....this is gonna be fast and furious......
Ready!?!?!?
Tiki mandala progress pix!

Details!

"the Journey" second canvas....coming along....

working more on "fleshing him out" and slowly working on the transparency...

got the shields started in the sky too!

"Love Dove " Hawaiian Warrior finished!
Fun! Fun!

LOVE! sigh!

also did a lotta drawings!Squid came over for an Artjam on Saturday! WHEEEEEEEE!
it were FUN!

In fact I'll be bringing a clearview folder of these to hukilau to barter with artist and Ohana.....
cause this boy's BROKE!

"Celestial vehicle" spirit hook influenced...a rehash from the Arrival piece....

"Arrival of the Sun"

"Cave of the Night creatures" PNG inspired also!

"Happy hut and friends"

"the Sun calls a meeting at midnight"

"the king in repose" is that even a word?

"Moon Rider" a little bright and happy-but hey! PNG inspired work can be mysterious and Happy....i guess....

"Outside the Village"
this one mixes and matches a bunch of styles and locales...
sort of a Polynesian Rainbow coalition or sumthin!

"Spaceship of the Polynesian Exploration PARTY"
wplugger mentioned that ol' DVA gallery Flounder bisque rocket i painted...
so i figgered i'd draw a semi-new version...400000 more miles per gallon!

"the Lone Hut"

"Salutation"
A little too bright for my tastes, but someone may smile at it...
I may tint over it with a sepia.....

More shields!
"War Dance"

and two shield abstracts!
"four shields"

and "three shields" duh...

also went to the library with the stepkid and got the MOTHERLODE!
Thor Heyerdahl's "the Art of Easter Island"
Holy Fudge!
Go get it NOW! there is soooooooooooooo much art your head will spin!
Did a bunch of ink sketchbook drawing studies from it...
here they is!

and lotsa front/side/back views! tons of life and personality!

Decided to draw a scenario where ALL of them arrive at the island before the Polynesians...
or Peruvians....or Lemurians......or.......

GO BUY THAT BOOK! It's a BIG'UN!
so much weird anthropomormism (is that a word?)and mystery!
and what's the deal with the Janus head stuff?
a lotta links with the Moche Peru culture!
Saw some of those a few weeks ago at the LA natural history museum....
squat little buggers! and often with elaborate headresses!

Well, that's it for now...Hope to see a lot of you at Hukilau!
TWO MORE DAYS!

ARTGASM!!! I can feel all the energy humming off that last bunch o' drawings....nice!
I got that book last year and it's one of the jewels of my reference library. There's a lot of suspect "artifacts" in it, but most of em are pretty cool nonetheless - I like tourist pieces just as much as the old stuff. A handful of those pieces (the real deal) are just over the hill in Christchurch - but unfortunately not on display these days...

ken you're crazy!! your local art supply store must love you-i can picture you storming in there twice a week w/ a crazed look on your face, and the owner just beaming each time.
see you tomorrow night!!

T

Ken! Great new work! I am always inspired every time I see your art... it's just INCREDIBLE!!!

Hey kids!
Last posting before i fly off into the great beyond...
or Hukilau,if the planes don't crash!
Sam-Thank you for the encouragement and inspiration,as always...
As for "designing" these.....I'll have to thank our primitive friends for most of that...
i just start there and run with it! (like a kid on his birthday, i may add!)
loafers?
No Way!
Y'all are just locked in a different Space/Time dimension!
Paipo-that book is a Jewel...
have to research further on what is "suspect" and what is not...
lucky duck-you get to see some of these beauties!
in person would have quite some power.....
tell them to take 'em out of hiding!
greentikipat-my art supply store does LUV the LLT visits!
I'm like a diabetic kid in a candy store!
i bet your art store feels the same about you!
See you in a few! ZIPFIZZ!
Tobunga-glad you find these posts inspiring, tho it looks like you don't need any with the wonderful series you've been creating! I'm gonna get bambooBen to build me that Opera house!
Well, kids-flying out in a few hours to hit hukilau...
like i said, I'm bringing a folder full of drawings to share and barter with y'all
as well as a couple of prints and coloring books....
buy me a few drinks/trade some art for art/etc.....
Currency is evil! Barter is King!
See y'all there
or await pictures next week!
Toodles and Aloha! :)

Fantastic Visit at Hukilau both you and Terrill(?) are such Sweethearts. Of course you are a bit WAY over the top which makes you the Best at what you do. Mrs BenZart and I really enjoyed our time with you and all your art and it is strange how that Maori piece of yours just followed me home, wouldn't take No for an answer. It seemed like it took forever but we Finally got to sit and talk face to face, thanks for all the inspiration and Energy you pass along. My Hukilau was complete, HappyHappyHappy

I felt the same way when I saw this piece!
It's my favorite of the bunch right now.

Hope ya took pics at Hukilau!

Can't waits to see more art esplosions in yer next post!

Llt had the quote of the Hukilau when I asked him how he does such wild, obssessive art:

"A lot of nervous energy and a stint in the Marines."

Simper Ku!

Fudge-a-Mudge!
Hukilau was off the HOOK!
the Fine Art Tiki show was BRAIN-BLOWING!!!!
Thanks Harold!
met so many of the East Coast and Midwest Artist Ohana
that my head is still spinning!
Plan on posting those pix in the hukilau thread sometime soon!
with lengthy narration of course!

Benz-an honor to meet and sit a spell with you and the missus!
Thanks for being so gracious with your time!

Raves-Mahalos!
Alohastation got that one in a trade at the Hukilau.....
i miss it already....
but am relieved that it's going to loved and displayed proudly
my new pendant from him helps as well!!!
More esplosions soon as soon as i regroup....

Robb-an honor to meet you as well....
I only wish...
A) we had more time to chat
B)it wasn't so loud in the bar at the Mai-Kai
C)I wasn't so blazed!
but then again, it wouldn't be a Hukilau without those factors!
Your work is astonishing in person!
you need to raise your prices....NOW!
Well, got a little bit of work done on the Mandala on Monday night...
This will make its premiere at the Tiki Freakout! show in July....
working title "Guardians of the Plumeria"
what i gots so far.....

some details.....

that's it for NAW! still recovering....
See ya soon!

Amazing. Excellent work. WoW.

Thanks Jeremy!
Big Toe said i'll be meeting you soon enough seeing that you're pretty close!
Those two paintings on your thread are awesome!

Subject: GUARDIANS OF THE PLUMERIA
Status: UPDATE PHOTOS OBTAINED AND DOWNLOADED.....
ENGAGE.....

here's some progress from a few little pockets of time this week....
was gonna do the Journey/Warrior/Vigor piece BECAUSE of the heat
and how that piece was all about heat...BUT it was too HOT!
made the brain boil....decided to work on the mandala
not much deep thought involved-more technical/lighting stuff....

I've been showing y'all this piece, but forgot to tell ya....
I'll be hanging it on the diagonal!

Also, the more it gets finished-the more Faces are slowly revealed...
FREAKOUT!

Take the middle area for instance....

FREAKOUT! quit lookin at me!
Reminds me of this Lovecraft story about
a guy whose paintings of landscapes had all these EYES and he,of course, went mad or something
so the friend or the doctor visited that landscape AND AS HE LOOKED,he began to SEE all the EYES!
Blinking and staring at him AND HE GOES MAD too!
FREAKOUT!

Here's some more...

And here's the best part!
This piece is so funny!
I mean, check out the orongos....
first off, i made them wingless-like the Moas
then threw these Hawaiian Feather helmets on them...
what's THAT all about? FREAKOUT!

Speaking of which, check out how their eyes help to form more faces!
FREAKOUT!

Do ya see it? Do ya see it? Huh? HUh?
FREAKOUT!

Also added tongues to the corner fellows...

FREAKOUT!
That's it for now....
I got some more 100 degree garage FREAKIN OUT to do!
Have a cool one!
:)

Oh my god.... I am actually literally freeeeeeeeeeeeeakkkkkkkkkking out
