OK, yes, a fad has been defined. But I don't think something gets popular without a reason, and I'm wondering what that reason is. True, if tropical-print shirts are now stocked in stores, and if people see others weraing them, there will be lots of unthinking copying going on. But why THIS fad?

I don't know bro...about the Hawaiian shirt thing...I grew up in Boston and every summer all the pasty white people (myself included) would don their hawaiian shirts and head to the beach to turn lobster red. Now, I realize that Boston was never (maybe it is now - who know) the hotbed fashion area, so my observation could be coming from a non-fashionable POV, but summer and hawaiian shirts (even corporate Hawaiian shirts) have alsways gone hand in hand.

and about that red/white/blue wearing - I agree. Either people are being more patriotic with their dress or we are just noticing peoples patriotism more because of 9/11.
I, too, am a sidewalk social scientist. Observations RULE!!!
