Today I got a growler of Karl Strauss' Belgian Abbey Red. No head to speak of, but a dark, haxy red color with a complex & malty nose. But that 1st taste! Complexities within complexities... This style's called "The red wine of beers," malt & hops are well ballanced, but it's the secondary parallel lactic fermentation that adds that extra special kick. The sourness of the lacto-bacilus innoculation (think plain yogurt made from beer, or not. It's hard to explain) is like rich & mildly tannic red wine or a complex cheese. I think this 1's only available from the Brewery Gardens in Mira Mesa, but do yourself a favor & try someone else's Belgian red ale!
