etc..... gonna wait til it's dialed before i share more photos..
it was a fun team-building venture and there was a lot of fun moments
talking with the others in the art dept
what a blessing to be able to thrive in such a fast paced creative environment!

Kinny, fantastic work as always!
I want to eat lunch at your workplace....!
Congrats on red-dotting your Laluzapalooza piece before the show even opened! I heard they had over 15,000 submissions for that show and our very own Mr. Ruzic was selected to be a part... You rock, my good sir.
I also want to thank you for sharing your sketch for the lunchroom mural... I always appreciated seeing your WIP pics. I know you are really busy, so even a quick peek at that preliminary sketch out was a nice bonus.

Blessings, brother!

Hey Jason!
Mahalo...
for the heartfelt sentences and congratulatory words!
Hanging at la Luzis a nice validation to my "fine art" side
the first 15 years of this artistic journey..
right before

Last year i submitted
"River and Moonlight"

but i think it was TOO abstract/outside their comfort zone of acceptance
and TOO Tiki,or maybe it just wasn;t up to snuff
it's a mystery...
because i think THAT piece is much more "Fine-Arty" than the woodburn....
But with the NOVELTY of pyrography, and the fantasy-based theme
one could see why they picked it..
makes me smile....

i hope to see MANY friends that night
AND to see some AMAZING Art and meebee meet some fellow freaky artist types
:)
inspiring!

i apologize that the offering below had no studies before completion
empee sent it with the composition and initial shapes
already mounted...all i had to do was paint em...

Outstanding mural Ken!

Sneaks!
Have YOU been submitting to the laLuz shows?
Your Presidents NEED to be up there!
You Sir,are a TRUE artist
one i aspire to someday be....
Murals are fun...this would be my 4th or 5th
the smallest 8x10-biggest 8x24 when they were building the
RONALD REAGAN COURTHOUSE ..
this one was peanuts....but a nice opportunity to cut loose on a big space!

Okay... is that everyone?
Did imiss anyone?

Anyways... the Bowl show is Sunday at the Tonga Hut

so mp was sweet enough to suggest a collaboration to TommyBoy and i
We accepted and he ROSE ABOVE
studying our pieces
choosing favorite motifs
adding new ones

the genius of empee is that he
painted with shapes and composition
and gave us wonderful creations to
add 2-dimensionalvolume and form and mood
a true collaboration

it's an honor...
you should see his drunken baby dance
:)

This one the narrative was difficult...
the story was half-decided by the shapes and characters
but as the painting progressed
i was painting and talking in different voices
playing each character for fun

...
:)

So here's the title....
"Midnight Concoction"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on dimensional wood
mounted on velvet
with a stunning hand-carved frame by Mikel Parton
19.5 x 23"

Let's take a clock-wise tour around this delightful piece
and i dunno what it is,but velvet friggin POPS an image !

see?
I'm a Giver....
for you a Tiki Central EXCLUSIVE!
Here is the 2-d segment of the tour

The shield in this corner is amused
but still a little terrified
by the light and the enthusiasm of the pufferfish!

Pufferfish lamp is GOIN AWF!
i painted the glow on the actual velvet
wHICH WAS HARD!
and i totally did it wrong
wetting the velvet first..
so then empee advised to DRY BRUSH it on
which i did afterwards
so it's kinda amateurish
but take into consideration that i had to paint this at a 45 degree brush angle
and with a chunk of wood in the way
like fishing for keys down a gutter!
:)

Okay... Now check this OWT!
the bottle that overlaps the shield is DIMENSIONAL
it's about a 1/2 inch ABOVE the shield!
Anyways,i decided to carry a bit of the stained glass style
with it's faux dimensionality
and apply it to a 3-d surface
WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!
i imagine this guy sniffin the cork of the rum bottle!

As we journey lower We see the label of Cap'n fishPaw's Rum
and a happy lil ku mug awaiting his sip
on the ends of the bowl smiling skulls
suspended by ropes thru the eyeholes
rest on tiny blue bases...

Here's the middle of the Blue Bowl full of the lava colored concoction
I imagine him panting like a thirsty dog
where nobody filled the water dish!

on the bottom left, you can catch a hint of the dimensionality of the straw in front of the pineapple-diving the light
Also, take a closer look at the Ku in the middle...
i painted his body onto the inside of the bowl
and the effect of 3-D magic is enhanced as the patron walks past
a total Optical Illusion
On a Few different levels..
WOWz!

Alright.. Time to get real...
Share with the audience...
Here's a tour to show ya how the mind-boggling Dimensionality of this piece
is constructed...a peek behind the curtain...
you could never get this by seeing it up in the wall

Here's a level view from the bottom of the piece..
you can seethe areas raised above the surface of the velvet
the Bowl sticks out the farthest
the pineapple/Ku mug/Rum bottleare the basement level
below the bowl
and the shields are the cellar
below the basement
VERY close to the surface of the velvet
the pufferfish is raised a 1/2" maybe 3/4" above the surface of the velvet
like the bowl....

Here's a picture from the side
imagine trying to paint under this labrynth of dimensional surfaces
SOMEBODY Call the WAHmbulance!
i told empee NEXT collab to send the pieces
i'll send them back
he can then assemble it
Win WIn!

Here's another angle showing the complexity of this lil miracle!

Here's the pufferfish with the messy sides
here's the genius of empee
he cut most of em at a 45 degree angle INWARD
Perfect!
you can see my scumble marks trying to work a glow on velvet at impossible angles
a testament to this EPIC Challenge!

Here the viewer can see the main supports for the Bowl and some of the Hi's and Lows of the other shapes....

Here's the other side givin y'alls the
mind-numbing Angles of this Museum worthy mousetrap!

And here's the final INSIDE EDITION view
of the bowl and the pieces behind it

One really has to see this in person and to walk back and forth
and around it
to appreciate the True Collaborative masterpiece that THIS IS!

La Luz and the Tonga Hut
I'll be showing in Hollywood TWICE this weekend!
WHOOP!

Anyways..work tomorrow
gotta get some sleep
I hope to see and Hug many of you on Friday!
Aloha!
:)
