I have limited experience with Redwood, but here's what I know. Sandblasting is the best. To get a similar effect use sveral brush with varying degrees of stiffness. Mike is correct that using the torch will assist in creating the effect you want. be sure to wear a mask when sanding/grinding/brushing redwood - it is caustic (meaning it it exremely bad for your lungs).
