I'm a bit surprised that no one has gone for the James Joyce reference in this discussiion. After all, "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" is much the one man's exploration with the same questions posed and discussed here. Stephen Dedalus goes through a process of discovery ultimately sending him away from the conventions of his life in order to dedicate himself solely to his art of writing. Stephen determines that the life of an artist has to flourish unimpeeded. So, much like the real life experience of Paul Gaughan, Stephen creates an independent existence within which his art can flourish.
