...and a fondness for the melancholy and honor of fighting for a cause already lost, like the changing of the times, and its inevitable effect of forgetting. To stay with the "battle" metaphor: I am a big fan of Samurai movies and culture, too, and always liked what Abe Shosabura, master Swordsman of the Yagyu ryu, said about the last retainers of his clan that died fighting for this tradition:

"They were like autumn lightning, a thing out of season, and empty promise of rain that would fall unheeded on fields already bare."
