Unfortunately, there won't be any more Smoking Menehunes tiki central events. That ship has sailed. Let's just say it has been proven that Hawaiian music has "selective appeal" for many TC'ers. That's not really a bad thing, it just is what it is. As I said, people here mostly grew up on rock, and need to hear that foundation. The smoking Menehunes had more in common with vaudeville and really early music. No drums, no distorted guitars, and no fez hats. I still love the SMs too, BTD, but all things must come to an end. PLus you never know where we will turn up. Just this weekend we did a gig for a bunch of surfers (dudes that love Hawaiian music!!) and Riptide was there. We may also be backing up Palika and uncle Titus at the long beach festival.
We (The Hula Girls) just had a jam session with a new drummer, who shall remain nameless as he has not comitted yet, but it sounded awesome! The new sound will be far more appropriate for the retro scene. However, we will be appearing as a trio for the boo ben gig that is coming up.
Tell you what, you want to see the Smoking Menehunes at a tiki event? Send letters to Otto so we can play next year's oasis. For some reason we have been boycotted after playing there 4 years ago! The fact that a heavy gigging hawaiian band that has played damn near every other major gig was not invited in the last 3 years...you tell me why the Smoking Menehunes should bother staying together as a band for TC events! Is it because we sucked? Not kewl enough? Is my hair not long enough, teeth not white enough? Music too sleepy and mellow? Do we have BO? Are there some members of the band that are disliked?
Who knows. Who cares! We still play every weekend.

And then there was Korea.
