Benz ,
The kilt tartan is my clan's , Grant , or one of them . We call that one Red Modern .
The taiaha is my handiwork .
Manuka from Koukourarata (Port Levy), a bay on Banks Peninsular , olive oil finish . The whakairo is not mine tho , I left the upoko blank , a tuakana , whom I started mau rakau training with , did it . Seeing as I am of Irish and Scots lines , and not of Maori , I was hesitant to carve it .
He surprised me , with the gift of the Pictish style ,a big Celtic moustache , and the kowhaiwhai on the arero ,'cos I have a bit of the reo on mine he reckoned .
I made the kilt , canna have me Granddad all bare arsed eh.
My 'history ' comes mainly from having the good fortune of knowing some excellent carvers and tattooists , and meeting a few more .
I did get to work on a Waka Taurua about 25 years ago , for about a month . It is in a museum in Tahiti now .
I wielded an adz rather that a chisel on that .
Other that that , I'm a carpenter , who would rather be on me lathe , me mill , or me workbench doing whatever.
Jock
The business ends ......
