In Australia we pronounce it as rhyming with cowrie, my step sister is half Maori and that is how she says it too, with all my many dealings with Kiwis in OZ i have never been been corrected or heard it any other way except with the tounge roll of the r but put it down to accent...
cheer bro!

One of the great things about Te Reo Maori (the language) is that there is only one to way to pronounce the vowels (a, e, i, o, u = aah, ehh, ee, or, oo) & once youve got your tounge around sounding them correctly you really cant go wrong. *Cowrie - Maori is about as close a way to explain it (for the masses at least) as any Ive heard. Cheers Trav!

Toka: I have met Tony M on a few occasions & have seen a fair few of his carvings but couldnt say I know him well.
I will step up to the Great Man one of these days - I guess you could say that Im just waiting for a 'sign' that the time is right. Ive read about Rikis philosophy/aproach to ta Moko and have great confidence in him. If/when the time comes it is important to me to have him see what I do & hopefully gain his blessings in this regard.

Thanks for your compliments!
