I've been thinking lately about Bond theme music.

I'm very often thinking of Bond music, particularly Barry's. Right now I'm listening to "The Living Daylights", his last, and for me one of his best, scores for the franchise (the CD's bonus tracks are splendid additions beyond the original vinyl release).

Wanted to offer something to this great thread too, and so, as a long-time Barry / Bond film soundtrack collector, I thought I might share the sequence-list of a custom compilation I put together back in mid-2"007", that I call "Big Bond":

  1. Into Miami (solo edit) - Goldfinger - J. Barry
  2. The World Is Not Enough (Main Title) - Garbage / D. Arnold
  3. James Bond Theme (imo THE coolest version, from 'The Music Of John Barry' CD)
  4. Search For Vulcan - Thunderball - J. Barry
  5. Fight At Kobe Dock / Helga - You Only Live Twice - J. Barry
  6. Goldfinger (ost Theme Instrumental) - J. Barry
  7. Man Overboard (solo edit) - From Russia With Love - J. Barry
  8. A Pleasant Drive in St. Petersburg - Goldeneye - E. Serra
  9. Journey To Blofeld's Hideaway (opening edit) - OHMSS - J. Barry
  10. Thunderball (ost Theme Instrumental) - J. Barry
  11. 007 And Counting - Diamonds Are Forever - J. Barry
  12. Chateau Fight - Thunderball - J. Barry
  13. Mountains And Sunsets - You Only Live Twice - J. Barry
  14. Bond Is Back In Action - Goldfinger - J. Barry
  15. Diamonds Are Forever (ost Theme Instrumental) - J. Barry
  16. Bond Smells A Rat - Diamonds Are Forever - J. Barry
  17. Oddjob's Pressing Engagement - Goldfinger - J. Barry
  18. A Drop In The Ocean - You Only Live Twice - J. Barry
  19. You Only Live Twice (Main Title) - Nancy Sinatra / J. Barry
  20. Goldeneye Overture - E. Serra
  21. Mr. KissKiss-BangBang - Thunderball - J. Barry

I experimented with the sequencing for a while, and this works pretty well. It's meant to sound "big" almost in a big band sort of way (though there are a few unabashed action sequences), and capture the lush feeling and unique majesty (mostly Barry's) that nicely distills the Bond experience to me. Not a substitute for specific film score listening, just a notion to try to bring a spectre, er, spectrum of The Bond Sound together...

If you've got all the soundtracks it's a fairly quick compilation to put together. Anyone curious about how I chose to "edit" those tracks indicated as such (simply to capture a portion of the music that was preceded or followed by a passage that didn't blend well with the overall mix), I'll be glad to email you those three MP3s I modified.

Glad to know so many like-minded agents in the TC network.
