i'm still waiting for the sponge pic. i have a bench sander that has a flat disc (vertical) i could put a diamond disc on it if i could wet it. would that work?

Pdrake: go back to page 5 & you'll see a piccy of my grinding unit: the (blue) sponge can be seen sticking out of the top of the cowling, and through to the top of each wheel. The water hose is trailing off towards where I sit for handpiece work, but is poked into a hole a few mm in front of the sponge which then delivers a steady flow of water. I can even adjust the flow according to how hard I poke the hose into the sponge!

By bench sander Im assuming you mean an electric motor with a flat pad of metal or rubber, onto which discs of sandpaper or similar is attached?? If so, yes the same concept works with diamond discs (although as Paipo mentioned earlier, their uses are limited when compared to a peripheral wheel or combo). You would need a 'mud-guard' to catch the spray off it (if/when I get around to photographing some other workshops you'll see what I mean) & sponges can again be cut to deliver water. I have seen discs with central nuts/washers & without, the latter obviously being preferable as the entire face can be used.

The concept in practice is really much simpler & less scary than you might imagine. Just get those diamond tools spinning (any way you can), run some water on them & hold the stone against 'em... There are no real rules as to tool speeds. Really as long as the working face is getting enough water ie; not drying out as you work, you'll be fine.

Keep us posted!

Ben: Good idea on the 'My workspace' thread; Id love to see the set-ups/tools of the current active crew; especially the jewellers.
Im sure if you kick it off it will be well received Ben.

Cheers
Tama :)
