Thank you vintagegirl for sending Nichols our way and THANK YOU Nichols for some the best and most informative information that we've had so far! :D

OK everybody, you heard it, this is going to be a struggle and it's going to take a lot of us and require some work. I will keep trying to learn more but as I stated already I don't live in an area with Tiki locations that need saving. So I can only do so much! :(

With all due respect, you say you "don't live in an area with Tiki locations that need saving" and "can only do so much." I understand that point. Yet, you are yelling at people to get involved. You, in turn, must understand other's points and feelings. Yes, many tiki enthusiasts are crushed when an establishment is sold and leveled. There's no shame in announcing sorrow over losing a landmark. But you seem to "bag" on people for "bitching" or "complaining" over the loss because perhaps they weren't available to camp in protest. Who is? Are you available? Would that help unless it's years in advance?
Nichols is positive proof. It takes years of concentrated, tough, passionate dedication. I'm sorry, but it's not an "I don't live there, so got on the ball," mission. It can't be.
I appreciate your passion, but please remember, it's easier to rally your army when you are actually in the trenches.

Hi Ivy,

I understand what you're saying.
This began for me from reading post after post on different threads about Tiki locations being demolished or "renovated" to the point of non-Tiki. Since I had "some" background with working with local city planners and being a part of a Historically Registered neighborhood and a member of a National Historic organization I started out by offering people the information to get involved and "MAYBE" by doing so we can help prevent the closure of the next Historic Tiki Location that's on the chopping block.

Yes, I DID BAG on people for "bitching" and "complaining" over the loss because no matter how many times I tried to point people in the right direction to get involved and help prevent another loss I haven't read ONE post yet saying, - I went and joined this site, I joined my city council, I wrote my local congressman, or anything except I went and had a Pu Pu Platter and 2 more Mai Tai to support my local historic Tiki Bar!
Camping in protest is not what I am suggesting but rather something that is much more long term!
Have you heard the expression,You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink!
How many other threads like this have been started on Tiki Central?
I'm guessing none since no one has yet posted a link to some thread 3 years ago when somebody started trying to get people organized to save our Tiki locations. So in other words we post thread after thread, year after year, lamenting our loss each time and yet no one is getting a group together to do something about it.

EXACTLY! That's why I'm trying to MOTIVATE people right now! Because it does take time. I already explained what HUGE losses our city suffered through the 1970's - 1980's with people who didn't care about OLD buildings, (1800's), and wanted them torn out. If not for people who cared and recognized the Historical Importance of these locations, architects, historians, artists and the like, there would now be nothing left here but the "cookie cutter", prefab, dime a dozen homes that are built wall to wall.
I already belong to the National Trust, my money is already going to help save "RECOGNIZED" Historical Properties....problem is Tiki locations anywhere are not recognized as historical or important. And it take more than ONE person to give them that attention!

Not all the soldiers are in the "trenches". Some have to be Generals to point troops in the right direction, to guide and motivate them. Let's just say I stood up and noticed this was a WAR. We are taking severe casualties and losses to our side. I am trying to "rally" the troops and yet everyone is saying, "Yea, we don't like this. We don't want to see any more losses. But I don't have time. I don't want to fight, (participate)."
Besides Dawn, (who's working on the Poly Pop Museum project), and Nichols I haven't seen one other post of anyone else actively trying to support preservation of our Tiki landmarks.

So honestly, what more do YOU want me to do?

You come back and tell me that you've joined this or that in your area and got your other Tiki friends to do the same and are working to register or save a specific location and you need me to come out and help you with this or that or speak or whatever......you give me a time and place, (with enough advance notice for me to arrange things), and I will be there if that is what you want! :)
I'm not talking about a "closure party" and I'm coming out for drinks and an auction!

Anyone else want to step up and say they'll do the same?
