Country and Western, Western Swing, R&B, Rockabilly, and Rock 'n Roll through the mid 60s was fun, often funny, celebratory, and didn't take itself too seriously (the early Beatles included).

Classical, Jazz, Opera, Blues, and Folk are serious musical forms.

Rock shouldn't be too serious. In the late 60s it became too much so. I would guess that drugs may have played a big part. Many of us experimented with drugs in our youth - oh no, not me  - and went through a serious introspective meditative phase, but you eventually snap out of it, unless you permanently fry your brain and never want to leave the 60s like Sky Saxon.

The Ramones and a few others put the fun back in rock 'n roll.

These is just my opinion. You have a perfect right to like or prefer "serious" forms of rock if you want. Once in a while I like to listen to some of it - Dylan, or Quadrophenia by the Who for example.

Re: Stan Kenton, check out the albums "Back to Balboa","City of Glass", and "Cuban Fire". These are some of my favorites.

Seeing American Graffitti at the drive-in changed my life. I went out and got the soundtrack album, and soon after discovered K-Earth 101 oldies radio in L.A., and pretty much stopped listening to mainstream rock radio until the Cars, Police, Blondie, Talking Heads, and the Ramones started being played.
