This advice is all good. Never had our car broken into in Hawaii (but we had two break-ins in froofy Santa Monica - in our Driveway!) - but that is because we follow the above rules. Our cars are devoid of all stuff whenever we park anywhere. If we are heading to the beach or hiking, I take the cash and a credit card out of my wallet and put it in my bathing suit pocket (leaving the wallet at home). I also take the car key off of the keyring and leave the rest of the keys at home. It all goes swimming with me - and just about every shop near the beach is used to taking wet money :) On hikes we don't leave someone with the car - we just make sure that you can easily see the car is totally empty. Often we will put the back seats down on our hatchback to let folks peer into the empty trunk. A few years ago I did a hike with some friends at the Pali Highway Hairpin turn. Thieves broke into my friends car, and to get into the trunk they actually shredded their way through the back seats! A total mess - ant the worst part was their was nothing in the trunk in the first place! |
