It's an adze comprised of traditional Mangaian motifs, surmounted by a tiki, and with various other Cook Island carving patterns around it. The bottom curls (koru) are pretty much NZ Maori style. This piece was made up for me on the spot - this is the traditional way this artist works - he talks to you about your life and interests, meditates on it for a while then starts work. It takes a fair bit of faith, but I love the result and think it has much more relevance than something picked off a wall. Oooh, that tickles!
