Tristan here.... just a note to follow up on the topic of cheaper lodging in Ft. Lauderdale for the Hukilau.

While there are cheaper hotels in the general vicinity of the Holiday Inn (although I don't remember any that were really within walking distance), they rank pretty low on the quality scale. I'm not sure of their pricing, but judging by the window air conditioners and rough exteriors, I'd say $39 or $49/night is probably possible. HOWEVER....

when we planned the Hukilau, we decided that the comraderie/social aspect of a host hotel was a big part of the experience. Just running into other tiki enthusiasts in the elevator, hotel bar, or restaurants/bars next door to the hotel is a big part of a Tiki event (as demonstrated at the Caliente Tropic event in Palm Springs). Factor in that staying at the host hotel not only ensures that you'll get into the Friday event, it also means that you won't have to deal with driving/getting a cab to get back to your room. Carpooling with new Tiki aquaintances to the Mai Kai, hanging by the pool or the beach, and just being in a place that isn't a dump all weigh in favor of the Holiday Inn.

Having been broke at various times in my own life, I empathize with anyone facing economic challenges and if saving the $20 or $30/night will get you to the Hukilau, by all means do whatever you need to 'cause we want you there. But for most people coming in from out of town, I would think the small difference in nightly rate would be a minor part of their budget (after factoring in travel expenses). We're also working on some discount coupons from the neighboring bars/restaurants that will save host hotel guests a few more bucks. As they say in the Popeil commercials: "Now how much would you pay????"

As always, if you have any questions/difficulties with booking at the Holiday inn or the Mai Kai, please email me at: [email protected]

And kudos to the wonderful Tiki community for helping each other out with travels tips and ideas!
