I wonder if it has anything to do with the Mormon Church's strong presence throughout Polynesia. Paul Theroux said that you can tell if an island's people are Polynesian (vs Melanesian or Micronesian) by the existence of local Mormon Churches. Plus, they do own and run the Polynesian Cultural Center.
