I've been digitizing a lot of my Hawaiian and Hapa Haole records lately, for convinience in bringing them to spin at Tabu Tiki Nights at Trader Vic's and elsewhere.

It can be really infuriating to be halfway through the album, and then realize... yup... this sounds familiar... this is one of THOSE.

I've begun a chart to try to track which recordings are on which records, with the song titles down the left column and the LP or artists names along the top. Dots on the matrix this forms shows which tracks are on which records.

When it gets really infuriating is when they change the titles of the exact same recording of the same song. One of my faves to spin is sometimes called Kalakawa Hula, and at other times is called Hawaiina Starlight, and Moon of the Islands on other records I own. I wouldn't be surprised if I unearth another copy of the same recording of the same song by the same unknown musicians, but with a different song title and a different artists credited...

Urgh. A music war, indeed.

Iorana!
