today my wahine gave me the 1948 "bartender's guide... by trader vic" for my birthday.

guess what - no mai tai recipe. (!)

again, there is the recipe (page 371) for

"TRADER VIC'S PUNCH

1/2 orange
1/2 lemon
1 1/4 ounces dark Jamaica rum
1 1/4 Puerto Rican rum
1 slice pineapple
1 teaspoon sugar [0.17 oz - ed. j$]
1/2 teaspoon orgeat syrup [0.08 oz - ed. j$]

Squeeze orange and lemon and drop in mixer; add handful shaved ice, liquor, fruit, and rest of ingredients; shake well and pour, unstrained, into a 14-oz stubby glass. Serve with straws"

i smell some revisionist history ~ at least perhaps the above drink became the mai tai as he changed it slightly and his friend said "mai tai - roa ae" ~ but probably after '47/'48...
