What is the next coolest thing to collect?

Pages: 1 2 50 replies

So far, I have been collecting tiki's, monster toys, and big eyed art.
However, I am a very fickle collector - Maybe it's because I like so much stuff.

I'm trying to find a new passion to clutter my home. Something small. Any ideas?

My other personal favorite thing to collect is Vintage Pin-Up art, but I have a couple of friends that collect old lunch boxes, that always seemed cool too.

Believe it or not, vintage paint-by-numbers art is now collectible. If this tickles anyone's fancy, check it out at paintbynumberz.com

I though about collecting old condom tins but they get pretty pricy.
:tiki:

Vintage 1968-1972 Hot Wheels cars.

8-Track tapes.

Vinyl records.

Hawaiian shirts.

Buddhas.

Ganeshas.

Wine.

There! That's the complete list of cool things to collect.

What about CD's with cover art done by your favorite artist, vintage license plates or HRH (Hard Rock Hotel) casino poker chips? Now those are cool!

Rotary phones.

Turquoise kitchenware.

Miata goodies (see sig below).

Weird jewelry.

Weirder handbags.

Vintage bowling shirts.

I collect Tarot decks, cocktail books (!) and rubber stamps. Found some great Tiki/tropical stamps lately that I will use to make stationary and my July 4th cards...

Sorry, I can't tell if you are male or female, but if female, you can't go wrong with jewelery. Price ranges from pennies-millions!

Personally, I love vintage hand made glass fruit, flower, and bird, jewelery. Ususally Italian or Czech in origin and very detailed. But beware, just like tiki mugs there are many repros! I also live gaudy rhinestone stuff in all colors! You can throw on a black tank and a stunning piece of jewelery, and you're ready to go!

The best thing about collecting jewelery is it goes out for all to see! People don't have to come to my home to see my collection and I always get comments! I currently make beaded jewelery, (I'm actually getting backed up on orders) and when I wear a vintage glass fruit piece to the bead shop for supplies, the shop owner and customers ohh and ahhh!

I've collected vintage clothing for many years and often get "wow, were'd you get that outfit?" There's a nice feeling in knowing that people can't just go to the mall and get what you're wearing. Styles always come back too. I saw a show that said polka-dot sundresses, 50's style are in this summer. I just thought "Hummm, I have those" Try a portable collection-you'll get instant feedback.

K

I don't know the official name of this stuff, but have been collecting it for years. It goes well with tiki decor. Objects made of abalone or paua shell imbedded in clear lucite. A perfect marriage of my fascination with iridescence, and my inexplicable compulsion to laminate things.

It's made into trays, paperweights, wall plaques, and spoon rests, etc. Even toilet seats, which I would love to have. But $100 for a toilet seat seems a little extravagant, unless you work for the Pentagon.

I collect shot glasses, don't care if they're cool or not. Small, portable and usable. Anyone know what a California shot is? Not a noun but a verb. Action. I was quite surprised by it.

I think the popularity of paint by numbers has a lot to do with an exhibit of the art at the Smithsonian about 2 years ago - it sparked my interest and now I pick 'em up whenever I come across them at thrift stores!I have never paid more than $4.00 for one!

I enjoy collecting memories, snapshots of life as it was happening.

Picture of mornings and afternoons to pacify me as I sit in my twilight.

Recollections of my children's life to cherish, hoping that I never find that that's all I have left of them.

Thoughts of my thoughts as an ignorant man, as I ponder them with the learned degree of time.

I like to find a situation and absorb it into my memory, what did I see, smell, feel and taste as it was happening.

I collect these valued items for only selfish purposes. They are mine and I keep them as safe deposit to tender in lean times...

Bong, that sounds like a Hallmark card...

I collect quotes from Bong's witty, inspired, motivating posts and copy them into a Word document. I plan on printing them out and framing them for my bar.

And on International Tiki Day, I will burn them in the pile that is to be sacrificed.

Poly Pop- Finally we are seeing the INNER Bong and you have to trivialize him to a Hallmark Card. Shame Shame. Someone slap Bong back to reality (although as a parent, I wish to believe his soliloquy ch. sp.) On to Cynfulcynner--I remodeled my entire kitchen around a 1940's turpuoise clothes washer and dryer. I NEED turquoise kitchenware. I need a turquoise oven (GAS though) and Chambers may be my ticket. Any leads?

I have turquois dinnerware, Monerey Ceramics and a cool plastic set. I've been thinking about selling the Monterey and a working turquois fridge I have sitting in my garage. Do you need one of those? Let me know (Private message or e-mail) and I can send you some pics.

The little TOMY wind up toys. They're small, the designs are cool, they have neat movements, and TOMY has produced a huge variety of them since the 70's. I find them in thrifts shops for 99 cents or less, "collectible" prices seem to be between $3-$5.

Keep in mind the "Collect What You Like" rule. You need to find an additional item to like. Go to a flea market or even a big antique mall (you might want to drink a can of Shasta Tiki Punch first, for luck, or a mai tai if you're not driving), then empty your mind, and watch for some previously unnoticeable neat $5-or-less item to catch your eye.

I just hope it's not a toy or model blimp. Those are all supposed to be for me.

I collected vintage felt pennants for a while but they linger in my closet and have never been put up so I stopped. They don't quite go with the new saucer house. Maybe I'll save them for my cottage. My cottage that I don't have! haha

I always wanted a cottage done up in 'Bigfoot Lodge' and tacky Candiana type decor - a framed pic of the Queen in the john, a fake moose head on the wall, Mountie dishtowels, snowshoes on the wall, that sort of thing...

Bong,
If you ever make it to one of my parties, you definately got to bring some of that tiki gaunge your doin. Drinks on me!! Have you ever found\bought a tiki bong? Just wonderin

My apartment came with a turquoise stove and fridge; the kitchenware came from various flea markets.

Ask your local auto body shop if they'll repaint appliances.

I collect offbeat music. Amongst my favorites ... William Shatner singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (off an album entitled Golden Throats which also has Leonard Nimoy singing "Proud Mary") and Pat Boone's No More Mr. Nice Guy album in which he covers Guns and Roses, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne, to name a few.

Why not collect:

Terracotta obelisks containing the sacred soil of WWI French Battlefields.

"Sanitized For Your Protection" bands from Hotel toilets around the world.

The receipt for EVERYTHING you buy throughout the year.

"Just Thinking of You" greeting cards from the early 90's.

Bottles of early 20th Century Radium Patent Medicine cures.

"Pink Lady and Jeff" episodes.

Scotch Tape dispensers.

Store them in your garage. Never use them or look at them-you don't "Want to wear them out." When you 'buy the farm' your family can toss them in the dumpster for some other nut-job to fish out.

That's right Atomic Cocktail. It seems stupid to collect anything except maybe money. Life is so short and before you know it, they will be fishing our stuff out of a dumpster or picking it up at a yard sale, estate sale or thrift shop. All is in vain really. Except love. It lasts forever.

S

My favorite thing to collect is my bi-weekly pay check. I have a friend who collects unemployment. We both collect bills.

Hey Bong,
What happens to your collection if you get amnesia?

Laney- It sounds like you have some wonderful things. Jewelry is not really my forte. :)

Thanks for the great ideas.

Cheers,
Mike T.

There are some kit-type ones around (like Revell's Goodyear Blimp from the 1970s), and some readymade models. Also diecast metal blimp banks, which are not quite models and not quite toys.

Here's what I need to acquire next:
https://www.modelpower.com/mdlpwcart/FMPro?-db=mpproducts.fp5&-format=detail.htm&-lay=cgi&-sortfield=stocknum&category=POSTAGE%20STAMP%20AIRCRAFT-G%20SERIES&-max=100&-recid=36772&-token.0=12681323&-find=

But you should collect anthropomorphic fruit and vegetable salt and pepper shakers. Or swizzle sticks? Postcards? Souvenir pennies?
