That should be interesting! Just like Tiki Bob's, the Moai's simple features allow for a wide range of artistic interpretations. Stretching it or compressing it, altering the mouth here or the forehead there, while still keeping it recognizable: The possibilities are endless!

James Teitelbaum's "Big Stone Head" provides ample samples of Moai madness! :)

Great idea Ernie!
Count me in on this one!

T

You know I'm in!

Let's put the limit at three for now, since we don't know how many artists want to participate.

Artists---Don't send artwork to GROG. GROG not going to hang everybody else's work and have to ship it.
Send to somebody else who coming to Tonga Hut, or just post it in the online show we will do in conjunction with the Tonga Hut show for all the out-of-towners who want to participate.

well, I'll say for now that I'm in, just as long as what happened to me with the Bob show doesn't happen then too.

Hey Ernie im in if its kool .

Hi Everyone, I've started a bowl called Out Of The Rock. A dear friend where I used to work went to Easter Island. While there she bought a carved wooden Moai. When I retired from work she gave me this treasure. I decided to have it as my model for this art exhibit. Thank you Jan I love you and miss you. Wendy

This is a bowl that I sculpted and made a mold of.

I used Jan's gift as a model.

I carved the tiki into the clay. I poured the bowl and let it sit long enough to be thick.

I carved the moai twice.

Into the kiln tonight.

I will use under glaze to add depth to the moai.

Another of Grog's shows that we can all have fun with. Cheers, Wendy

GROG: Sounds like fun... id like to take a stab at it! what mediums are ok for the show?

I finished the bowl. I'm just waiting for more of the gang to show up here. Those are good examples Grog, Wendy

I'd love to participate in this! But being a Tiki Artist in the Southeast can be lonely sometimes! I guess I can join in on the online show? :) I just did a few Moai paintings for Hukilau and really enjoyed working on them.

Open to all artists. You must bring and hang your own art,or have somebody hang your art for you. GROG not hang your crap for you; GROG got GROG' own crap to worry about.

I will have a carving and a lamp for sale.

Wendy's bowl is coming along nicely!

Here's a couple of work-in-progress shots of a moai bowl I'm making for the show.

Detail of the side, with birdman petroglyphs:

I still need to add a top knot, which will be a fire chamber.

Hoping to finish another bowl idea, and a painting too.

Looking forward to seeing what people are going to create!

Yes, we'd love to have you----on one condition, though. You've got to paint GROG' mermaid with a moai! It's been over 20 years since GROG slung paint, so GROG not able to finish it in time for the show.

:D

Oooh, I will have to see if I have that day open!

Grog,
This one needs to be made into a 3D Mug by you.
The helmet would be like the Bali Hai Mug (comes off with a straw hole)

W

TOBUNGA, I LOVE YOUR BOWL.

MINE IS FINISHED SO HERE IT IS. TWO MOAI BEING CARVED OUT OF THE ROCK WERE ABANDONED DUE TO LAVA FLOW.

TB

I would like to be part of it... Does anybody can take my moai decanter to this show? Pleeeease?...

G
GROG posted on Tue, Jun 7, 2011 9:56 AM

OK. The ONLY person GROG make exception for is Bai, because GROG love Bai, so Bai can send decanter to GROG if Bai want it in Tonga Hut art show. Or, we will be doing the ON-LINE art show again the day after the Tonga Hut show, and you can post it there if you'd rather. Or, you can do both. Send GROG PM

You've got about a month to get your Moai art completed before MOAI MADNESS!!

T

Whoa Grog! That pic is SO Omni Magazine from the mid-80's... where did you get it?

G
GROG posted on Sun, Jun 12, 2011 12:13 PM

Just found it somewhere on the internet.

T

Oh, I thought you were going to say from an Omni magazine from the 80's.

Wendy's bowl looks incredible! Congrats to you!

Here's another in-progress shot, with the top knot fire chamber. I also went back and re-worked the Moai. Underglaze on the top knot, hoping to fire soon, and then a glaze fire for the rest.

M

very nice moai bowl

G
GROG posted on Fri, Jun 17, 2011 4:14 PM

Once you put liquid in there, tobunga, it's going to look like the Moai is "whizzing in the pool". :D

T

Mahalos, mymotiki! Glad you like my moai bowl!

Grog, it'll only look like wizz if there's a yellow colored cocktail in the bowl (I hope!)

Here's an in-progress shot of my next bowl, in the shape of the Rapa Nui island...

...more to come soon (I hope!)
